Is minimum car insurance enough?
Minimum cover keeps you legal, but its limits can be low. One serious accident can cost far more than the minimum pays, and you owe the rest.
It keeps you legal. That’s about it. Minimum required cover is set by law where you live, and the limits are often low. If you cause a serious crash, the costs can blow past those limits fast, and you’re personally on the hook for the difference.
What minimum usually means
Liability only: paying for damage and injuries you cause to other people. It usually does nothing for your own car.
Add-ons worth understanding
- Higher liability limits. Often the best-value upgrade.
- Collision. Fixes your car after a crash you caused.
- Comprehensive. Theft, hail, fire, hitting a deer.
- Uninsured motorist. For when the other driver has no cover.
When minimum might be fine
An old car worth very little, and almost nothing else to lose? Skipping collision may make sense. Skimping on liability rarely does.
