Insurance Basics, Straight Up
The basics of renters, car and health insurance for young adults: what each covers, the key terms and the common traps.
Insurance is a deal: you pay a bit regularly so a big disaster doesn’t wipe you out. Every policy has the same moving parts. Learn them once and every policy gets easier to read.
The moving parts
- Premium. Your regular payment.
- Deductible. Your share of a claim before cover starts. Explained here.
- Limit. The ceiling on what they’ll pay.
- Exclusions. What’s not covered, ever. Read these first.
Renters insurance
Covers your belongings, your liability if someone gets hurt or you damage someone else’s place, and often temporary housing after a covered disaster. Cheap compared with replacing everything. Do you need it?
Car insurance
Liability is usually required by law. Collision and comprehensive cover your own car. Uninsured motorist cover protects you from drivers with none. Minimum cover is rarely the smart move; here’s why.
Health insurance
Watch four numbers: premium, deductible, copays or coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket maximum. Check which doctors are in network before you need one. Out-of-network bills can be brutal. Ask before you book.
Common traps
- Choosing the lowest premium without looking at the deductible
- Assuming a roommate’s policy covers you
- Not updating your address after a move
- Waiting too long to report a claim
